how to enjoy the ocean

  1. Step 1

Purchase tickets at the main entrance. You can buy daily passes, but for a few dollars more, you can buy a week long pass. The week long pass is a terrific bargain if you know you'll want come back again during your vacation. The Ocean Center also offers annual memberships, valuable if you know you'll be on Maui multiple times during the year.

  2. Step 2

Head to the Surge Zone to observe how aquatic life uses the waves to their advantage--for protection as well as feeding. Move on to the Tidal Pool area to interact with starfish, sea slugs and other tidal aquatic life; you can touch these gentle creatures, which will surely delight the kids.

  3. Step 3

Observe turtles from above and below. The Turtle Lagoon provides a unique tank that allows you to see turtles from above the water and then descend to see their tank from the side so that you can see the turtles under water. You'll often find a naturalist there talking about turtles in Hawaii, so check the schedule upon entry.
